Researching local history could unearth a big win

The history of suburbs such as Wangara, Western Australia, will be showcased as part of the 2015 City of Wanneroo Community History Awards.

The council initiative was introduced to encourage residents to research the heritage and history of the area for the benefit of future generations.

There are 36 suburbs within the City of Wanneroo for entrants to research. They stretch from Girrawheen in the south to Clarkson in the north, and around the city’s geographical centre of Wanneroo.

Entries can target any part of Wanneroo’s history, ranging from stories relating to Torres Strait Islanders or Aboriginals and pioneer families to buildings and individuals.

Original research presented as an unpublished essay, and migrant stories or personal memoirs, are the two categories.

This is an opportunity for those interested in local history to learn more about the area in which they live.

The council plans to share and preserve submissions into the 2015 awards by adding them to the main collection at the Community History Centre.

Each category winner in the Wanneroo Regional Museum competition will receive $500 with $150 awarded to the runner-ups.

Entries will be received up until 4pm on Friday, April 24th next year.

The city’s printing services have been busy preparing entry Forms that are available from community centres, libraries and the Wanneroo Regional Museum.

Further details can also be downloaded online or obtained by calling the museum.
