The city has recently endorsed a move to mount a business case to establish a North Coast Aquatic and Recreation Centre, with work to commence immediately exploring viable options for the Alkimos Central site.
According to the Mayor of Wanneroo, Tracey Roberts, the centre would provide many economic and social benefits locally, as well as for surrounding suburbs.
She said the Metronet bus and train stations already planned for Alkimos, plus the Mitchell Freeway extension, would provide easy access to the site.
A swimming pool for public use has, for several years, been considered a high priority, according to the mayor. She added:
“Swimming is a popular participation sport in the City of Wanneroo, particularly with children. Given the large and fast growing community in our northern growth corridor, the demand for a local swimming facility will continue to increase in the coming years."
The City's Aquamotion, which features a 25 metre lap pool, is currently the only aquatic facility open to the public locally. As a result, many residents need to travel to the Craigie Leisure Centre and HBF Arena in Joondalup.
Public facilities such as these are often included in brochure printing campaigns that list community sporting venues.
Design elements proposed for the new centre will involve community consultation and are expected to take place later this year.
