New initiative to provide faster approvals for small business

Small businesses in Wangara and throughout Wanneroo City are set to benefit from a new programme that aims to streamline gaining approvals for the sector.

The local government district of Wanneroo is among the first to sign on for the programme, called Small Business Friendly Approvals, and it is being administered in conjunction with the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC). Its main aim is to streamline the process involved in securing permits and licences for small businesses.

According to Mayor of Wanneroo Tracey Roberts, the initiative was introduced to help small businesses impacted by COVID-19 through accelerating regulatory reform. This will also aid economic recovery, and she added:

“Small businesses are the backbone of our community, with 13,000 local businesses providing more than 54,000 local jobs and many other significant benefits, such as opportunities for the City's residents to work closer to home."

Roberts said a City Survey in 2020 revealed that minimising the red Tape for local businesses would be a key to economic recovery post COVID-19. The area is home to 13,000 businesses, which employ in excess of 54,000 people. They range from printing services to retail and commercial undertakings.

Together with Cities of Rockingham and Melville, Wanneroo was selected to take part in the programme, which was introduced following the success of an initial pilot scheme. Prior to 2023, the SBDC plans to broaden the programme to include 20 councils.
