Hours spent with a paintbrush in hand while her toddler slept have paid off for a talented City of Wanneroo mother.
Torryn Edmonds, 29, of Hocking near Wangara, Western Australia, has won the City’s 2015 People’s Choice Award for her artwork titled Zen Aesthetic.
Mayor Tracey Roberts said Edmonds’ painting scooped the award from a field of 200.
She said there were many talented residents within Wanneroo City, and she was proud that voting for the People’s Choice Award went to a local.
The mayor praised the artist’s work, describing it as vibrant and intricate, resonating with the many art lovers who saw it.
Winning the People’s Choice Award came with a cheque for $600 and Edmonds could not have been happier, saying she was chuffed her painting was selected.
She said the watercolour and acrylic artwork represented 40 hours of work after her young toddler had gone to bed, and added that she was thrilled so many people had voted for it.
Flyer printing and information on the council’s website brings the awards to the attention of potential contributors each year.
This year, the 14th annual City of Wanneroo Art Awards, which offer a total of $16,800 in prizes, attracted 216 artworks including 19 sculptures, 47 works on paper and 150 paintings.
A sculpture by Jamie Worsley was chosen as the overall acquisitive winner, and will now be displayed in the City’s Art Collection.
