Government appoints Wangara business to panel

Three building firms, including Wangara-based Modular WA, have been chosen for a pilot panel by the state government. The panel is charged with delivering 80 new social housing homes across Western Australia.

The first 15 homes to be delivered by the pilot program have already been earmarked for four locations in regional Western Australia: South Hedland, Albany, Tom Price and Laverton. They will form part of an expected 275 new homes constructed for social housing throughout the state over the next two years, funded with an $875 million budget allocation for the sector. The investment brings the government’s total commitment to social housing over the next four years to $2.1 billion and 3,300 all-new homes.

The pilot panel is part of a Modular Build Program to be delivered through the Department of Communities. Under the program, 200 of the planned new social homes will use modular construction to speed up turnaround times. In a statement, John Carey, Minister for Housing, said:

“This first tranche of housing through the Modular Build Program is an important step in addressing housing demand where it is needed most, with a particular focus on regional WA.”

The government has announced further procurement processes for prefabrication and modular construction. Print shops are sometimes called upon for document collation to support tender submissions.

Contracts awarded under the program are expected to lead to increased employment opportunities for local communities like Wangara, particularly for apprentices.
