Generations apart, yet exhibition proves talent runs in family

A family’s creative talents are being celebrated by the latest show at the Wanneroo Gallery.

The free Artful Gene Exhibition has already attracted art lovers from Wangara and across the Wanneroo local government area, according to organisers.

The exhibition followed WA artist and zoologist Michael Bamford’s discovery of sketch Books belonging to his great-grandfather, UK-based Alfred Bamford.

Although they had never met, the sketches revealed an uncanny parallel in both their work and their lives, and this is now being celebrated by the staging of exhibitions in Australia and the UK.

According to Michael’s wife Mandy, the similarities between the two artists were remarkable, despite almost a century passing since the first sketches were penned by his great-grandfather and Michael’s fortunate discovery of his early works.

The early sketches by Alfred featured the natural world of insects, plants, birds and animals, and were created between 1860 and his death in 1929, according to Ms. Bamford.

Both artists shared a style of precision and accuracy despite never having the opportunity to compare notes, a fact that Michael found extremely uncanny.

Ms. Bamford said no doubt visitors to the exhibition, which opened at the Wanneroo Gallery in Rocco Street on November 18 and will continue until January 13, would be captivated by the similarities as displayed on brochure printing for the event and throughout the exhibition itself.
