Bookings open for Jamie Olivers community-based cooking course

The art of cooking could be spread throughout the City of Wanneroo, including Wangara, as aspiring chefs and students learn home cooking shortcuts and tips as part of the Jamie’s Ministry of Food Mobile Kitchen.

Edith Cowan University (ECU) Joondalup has teamed up with the mobile kitchen classroom for a three-year programme at the university.

According to celebrity chef Jamie Oliver, the Ministry of Food plays an important role in keeping the skill of cooking alive. He said increasing evidence indicates that long-term eating habits can be enhanced when people are taught food preparation from scratch.

Extensive newsletter printing has been undertaken on the subject of food. Research shows the recommended daily consumption of vegetables and fruit is eaten by only 10% of residents across the state, and two thirds of adults are obese or overweight.

The mobile kitchen’s arrival to the Joondalup campus in March will mark the beginning of a 14-week stay.

Local community members, ECU staff and students will be able to take part in the home cooking course each week from Monday to Saturday.

ECU’s Steve Chapman said ECU believed the programme would help to make communities more sustainable, healthy and prosperous.

He said staff and students would also benefit from research opportunities and industry experience offered through the partnership with Jamie’s Ministry of Food Mobile Kitchen.

Classes are due to begin in March 2016.
