The Western Australian government is seeking applications for the Premier’s Science Awards 2019.
Premier Mark McGowan said the awards are held to celebrate the state’s leaders in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and their achievements, adding:
"The Premier's Science Awards are an opportunity to recognise the outstanding achievements of Western Australia's leading scientists, and to celebrate the positive contributions they make to our daily lives and the State.
McGowan added that initiatives such as this have increased participation in STEM subjects throughout the state.
Applicants from Wangara and throughout Western Australia will be able to enter a new category, bearing the familiar Shell Logo Design, which has been named the Shell Aboriginal STEM Student of the Year Award.
This prize has been introduced to recognise top-achieving Aboriginal postgraduate and undergraduate students who are researching or studying health, medicine, mathematics, engineering, technology or science at university.
In addition, other categories include Chevron Science Engagement Initiative of the Year, ExxonMobil Student Scientist of the Year, Woodside Early Career Scientist of the Year and Scientist of the Year.
Applications from students, science communicators and researchers must be submitted by April 23, 2019 with the announcement of winners set down for August during National Science Week.
The awards ceremony will also include the naming of this year’s Western Australia Science Hall of Fame inductee, for which nominations are now open.
