Perth to host big week of kite racing

Some of the world’s most talented young athletes are set to hit the waves at Leighton Beach later this month, with Perth’s inaugural Kite-racing Oceanic Championships and Accelerator Training Camp taking place.

A series of intensive training sessions, presented by the Warren Jones Foundation, will be guided by four-time World Champion kite-boarder Steph Bridge. She will be accompanied by her son Oliver as they prepare WA’s junior `kiters’ for the competitive events to follow.

The idea of the camp is to increase and fine-tune skill levels across the board, with a major focus placed on upwind tactics, downwind angles, stance, start line strategy, stopping, parking and physical and mental preparation.

The competition will then heat up for the professional 2013 Oceanic Championships, where experienced tactics specialists show their skills in a battle to be named the ultimate champion before a home crowd and a large television audience.

The event is set to offer spectators plenty to get excited about, and will kick off with the traditional qualifying races before ending in a winner-takes-all grand finale.

Event coordinators have also invited local businesses to take part in the Village Sunset Market, where top quality West Australian produce will be on sale.

The high profile competition, which runs from November 27 until December 1, is expected to be the first of many major kite-boarding events to be held in the state. Organisers will no doubt benefit from enlisting the help of local printing companies when it comes to preparing programmes and Flyers.
