Contract award for rooftop Art Gallery project

East Perth residents are in a prime position to take full advantage of the nearby Art Gallery of WA's (AGWA) exciting new rooftop facility, for which the successful contractor has just been named.

The Elevate project contract, which will involve creating a rooftop venue complete with versatile gallery space atop the AGWA, has been awarded to ADCO Constructions. The works are expected to provide construction job employment for 265 people.

Jointly designed by Sydney company fjmt and Perth-based TAG Architects, the project will feature a rooftop venue designed to accommodate 500 patrons, a skybridge and external lift for after-hours access, a rooftop open air sculpture park that will display State Art Collection works, a new rooftop inside gallery and the relocation of conservation labs to the basement.

Minister for Culture and the Arts, David Templeman, described the rooftop project as an outstanding addition to Perth's Cultural Centre and Art Gallery, and added:

"Elevate will provide stunning views of the hills, the city skyline and the New Museum, and the combination of rooftop events, artworks and people will add vibrancy to the Perth Cultural Centre precinct."

Once completed, venues such as this can become vibrant and popular inclusions on brochure printing campaigns that target tourists.

Christopher Pease, a Noongar artist, has also been tasked with creating a 34 metre long artwork, which will act as the development's centrepiece. The project has an expected completion date of January 2021.
