West Melbourne seeks input on future transformation
Residents are being called on to share their thoughts and ideas for a new structure plan targeting West Melbourne, Victoria.
A City of Melbourne spokesman said a new structure plan is being prepared to ensure the area’s future in terms of accessibility, livability and sustainability in keeping with its rapid growth.
As part of the process, a discussion paper has been formulated to give stakeholders and community members an opportunity to provide valuable input that will help shape West Melbourne’s future.
The spokesman said Council first reached out to the local community for feedback in 2015 when it was devising the project’s key priorities, visions and issues.
He said the latest discussion paper came about as a result of the initial community engagement and other background information found in booklet printing and documents on planning, urban design, parking, economics and employment, transport and access, and heritage, which produced 12 ideas.
The ideas, he added, are themed around a number of strategies to assist in making the draft vision a reality, including Improve Main Streets, Support Good Growth and Create Great Local Places.
The spokesman said one of the visions for West Melbourne is to make the streets a place for people by including everything from services and local shops, to new open spaces, better cycling and walking routes, newly planted trees and a water-sensitive urban design.
Residents have until March 20 to have an input into the West Melbourne Structure Plan.
