The family friendly facility, established by non-profit group Melbourne Community Toy Library, provides a play space for children to try out toys with the option to borrow puzzles, toys, costumes and games to take home for short periods.
Children have access to a range of age-appropriate and educational toys without the cost of purchase for families or need for storage space, a particular benefit for inner-city families where living space can be constrained. In addition, children learn to care for the toys, which must be returned, and learn to share them with others.
Canadian Lauren Murdock was so enamoured by the toy library concept on arriving in Melbourne two years ago and experiencing first-hand the benefits for her family that she became the president of the not-for-profit organisation. The group is working on opening more facilities throughout Melbourne. Murdock sees benefits to the community beyond the library’s core lending service, saying:
“The toy library is a welcoming and safe place that provides a wonderful opportunity to connect with other families as the children play.”
Flyer printing is often used to promote community facilities and groups to families.
Access to the library is through an annual member subscription, with fees ranging from $40 to $90, and discounts are available through concessions or additional member volunteer hours.
