West Melbourne theatre enthusiasts are excited about the latest offering from producer Tim Lawson.
Poster printing at Victoria’s Regent Theatre is promoting his latest production `Circus 1903: The Golden Age of Circus’, which Lawson says was produced jointly with Simon Painter.
He said its leading characters baby Peanut and mother Queenie were created by the same team of puppeteers who worked on War Horse.
Lawson, whose show ‘The Illusionists’ turned a 10-day Sydney Opera House gig into a 25-country, 250-city smash hit season, is excited about presenting his latest stage production to audiences in his home town of Melbourne.
He said both productions shared the same charm and era, as well as each focusing on early circus arts like aerial ballet, hand-to-hand acrobatics and knife throwing.
While there is no sawdust, he added, the production captures the Big Top atmosphere.
Lawson said daring tricks seen in traditional circus performances will be part of the stage action, including a segment featuring the high-wire with no safety wire.
Together with Simon Painter, Lawson has put together an international cast for the show, which will run until January 12 at Melbourne’s Regent Theatre.
Previously, Lawson has produced ‘Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang’ and ‘Fiddler on the Roof’. He was also responsible for The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s first-ever staging in Singapore.
Lawson’s next big production, ‘The Wedding Singer’, is due to open soon in the UK.
