Home of the Bulldogs set for major upgrade

The iconic West Melbourne site that has been host to the old EJ Whitten Stand and home to the Western Bulldogs since 1969 is undergoing major upgrades.

After 53 years, the stand is being demolished to enable a major facilities upgrade at Whitten Oval. An amount of $36.6 million has been committed to Stage Two of the redevelopment, and a recent visit by Tourism Minister Steve Dimopoulos saw another $8.2 million added to the coffers for the project.

Dimopolous said the project was one of many being implemented across the state, and added:

“This development will be a game-changer for the Bulldogs and their supporters, with upgraded facilities for staff, players and spectators.”

The replacement of the old stand for a brand-new one as part of the redevelopment of the Whitten Oval precinct will see improved facilities and seating for spectators, as well as new administration offices, a function room and a place to host the club's Community Foundation. In addition, the redevelopment will provide sports lighting to broadcast quality, and refurbishment of the museum and entry building, plus a pavilion for use on match day that will include amenities, a first aid room, beverages, food and a merchandise outlet.

The sale of Promotional Products has long been an important part of major Aussie Rules football game fixtures. Completion of Stage Two is expected to be in early 2024.
