The City of Melbourne has set out a bold five precinct vision for transforming the Yarra riverfront with its recently released Draft Greenline Implementation Plan. The plan covers a four kilometre stretch of the river, starting from Birrarung Marr and culminating in the proposed Salt Water Wharf Precinct, adjacent to the Bolte Bridge and overlooking the city and the Port area in West Melbourne.
The Greenline design aims to celebrate and foster understanding of Aboriginal culture and incorporate local storytelling, ecology and re-purposed heritage assets while improving public access to and along the riverfront area. The proposal incorporates immersive experiences and creative landscapes that are intended to deliver a world-class educational, lively and, ultimately, iconic waterfront. Five planned precincts – Birrarung Marr, Yarro Yarro, River Park, Maritime, and Salt Water Wharf – each play a distinct role in the overall design. Flyer printing is a popular way to promote local area destinations.
The Yarra River – Birrarung is recognised by the City as both a major environmental asset and a culturally significant place. The Greenline proposal was informed by a range of guiding principles and policies, including the overarching Yarra River – Birrarung Strategy in place to protect the river and its environment. Any transformation of the waterfront will require collaboration between the Traditional Custodians, the City, the Victorian Government and adjoining landowners.
Community views are currently being sought regarding the proposal. The consultation period closes on 3 October.
