What's Happening in West Melbourne, VIC…

Call for artists to create works for iconic market precinct

The precinct containing the Queen Victoria Market and bordering West Melbourne, Victoria, has been earmarked for an innovative public art programme being undertaken by the City of Melbourne.

The city has invited applications from artists to participate in the Public Art Melbourne Biennial Lab that will be held for the first time this year under the curatorship of Natalie King.

The bold new programme will give 10 artists an opportunity to work with international and national experts to create temporary artworks that relate to the Queen Victoria Market precinct.

Lord Mayor of Melbourne Robert Doyle said artists selected to take part will be involved in every aspect of the project. It gets underway in June with two weeks in a laboratory setting working with public art experts, including Claire Doherty, a British arts producer, to come up with suitable ideas.

During October’s Melbourne Festival, temporary artworks produced by the artists will be installed in the market precinct.

Mayor Doyle said the historic Queen Victoria Market precinct, which has often been featured on postcards, calendars, and early examples of booklet printing, was ideal to show off the talent and creativity of local artists because it was an icon that oozed history, culture, atmosphere, and diversity.

Applications from artists to take part in the inaugural Melbourne Biennial Lab close at 11:00 pm on April 29. More information is available by visiting the council website.
