The Werribee Open Range Zoo is campaigning for state funding to the tune of $87 million. The zoo will look to use these funds to more than double its visitor intake.
Although the zoo will still look at a variety of ways to help pay for this expansion - like philanthropic donations and community funding - this expansion will rely almost entirely on state funding. Even though the state government has only assigned $1 million so far.
The number of visitors to the zoo has doubled over the past five years and the zoo has outlined the enormous benefits an expansion like this would bring to the region with an increase of 600,000 visitors each financial year to 1.5 million.
If the zoo manages to access this huge amount of funding, it will expand the meerkat enclosure into one of the world’s biggest, expand the lion habitats so it can have two prides and add a huge range of interactive and fun experiences for the whole family. With this much money at its disposal, the Werribee Zoo could be a whole new experience, not just in terms of the animals at the zoo but in terms of its marketing strategies.
