New focus on children's development in Wyndham

Children from Werribee and around the Wyndham area now have a new set of resources to help them develop skills in early childhood.

The information has been created through the Best Start initiative run by the state government to help parents and caregivers recognise how important it is to offer experiences to children, and how involving youngsters in everyday activities and interacting with them can help them develop.

Postcard printing and poster printing have been used to help create the resources, which feature images of local families taking part in everyday activities such as shopping or reading a book.

Andrea Nolan from Deakin University said it was important to expose children to language and writing as soon as possible. She said:

“Research has shown that the development of the brain is intimately linked to and influenced by a child’s environment. The experiences our children have each day help shape what and how they will learn throughout their lives.”

They will be available at libraries and schools, as well as being used by maternal and child health centres, and other services that are provided to assist families across Wyndham. Additionally, they will be used at events such as Children’s Week and various parent information sessions.

Those looking for more details about the resources are advised to contact Wyndham Best Start.
