Footscray Community Arts is now presenting an exhibition, “Rhythm in Ruby Shoes”, by artist Emily Dober.
Known for her works produced in gouache and watercolour, Dober’s artworks highlight the energy, colours and costumes of performance and dance. Dober uses her art to discuss the ways in which gender is portrayed in mainstream media, focusing significantly on body diversity and alternative representations of women. Film stills and quotes often appear in her artworks, imbuing them with nostalgia and personal relevance.
This exhibition marks the end of Dober’s two years’ residency at Footscray Community Arts, a program that provides support to deaf and disabled artists in their artistic practice and in the achievement of their goals. The exhibit is Dober’s first solo, large-scale exhibition, and combines drawings and paintings that speak the language of dance.
The exhibition is held in two galleries at Footscray Community Arts – the Entrance Gallery and the Gabriel Gallery.
“Rhythm in Ruby Shoes” also Forms part of Arts Centre Melbourne’s Alter State Program, which celebrates creativity, culture and disability. The inclusion of Dober’s work in this program highlights its significance within contemporary art and its close engagement with relevant social ideas and themes, celebrating a significant milestone in her artistic career.
Organisers planning similar events can utilise graphic design to advertise and promote their upcoming exhibits in exciting ways.
