A redevelopment project for the Footscray Town Hall is set to enter the detailed-design stage, after the initiative was given the green light by councillors at a recent meeting.
As a result, the council will seek the preparation of draft concepts, which will then be put in front of the community to attract feedback. This stage is often accompanied by a graphic design of the proposed designs.
The move to upgrade facilities and make the town hall accessible to members of the community has received much attention from the council during the last four years. Its redevelopment was also incentivised by a call from the community to lead the way in the area of sustainability by making sure its facilities are environmentally secure and energy efficient.
Footscray Town Hall dates back to 1936, when it served as a post office, courthouse and municipal offices. Changing standards in building codes and legislation, as well as organisational growth, have, over time, left the heritage structure no longer able to fulfil the purpose for which it was originally built.
Mayor of Maribyrnong Michael Clarke said a considerable investment would be necessary just to get it back up to code, so it was decided instead to move staff to another location and open the town hall up for community use.
The proposed refurbishment will aim at improving community accessibility and customer service, as well as adding community spaces, such as a plaza, park area and a multi-use space with seating for 200 people.
