The London 2012 Olympics are just around the corner and thousands of sports fans will soon be tuning in to watch the world’s finest athletes compete for the top spot in their chosen field. For years, poster printing has been a big part of the Olympic advertising and now, Footscray residents can see some of the famous Olympic Posters at Melbourne’s own home of great sport, the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
The National Sports Museum, which is based at the ground, is exclusively hosting an Olympic Posters exhibition, put together by London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. The Posters offer a record not only of the Olympics, but also of the world in each of the years on display. They also give visitors a glimpse of the work of some great designers and artists who have contributed work to the poster collection.
They include notable pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and David Hockney, alongside graphic designers such as Armando Testa. The collection of 100 Posters includes designs from 1851 through to those designed for the London 2012 Games, as well as some unofficial Posters designed by campaigners and advertisers.
In modern times, the Olympics has developed not only as a sporting competition, but also as a performance with spectacular opening and closing ceremonies and innovative advertising campaigns about both the Olympics and the host countries.
The exhibition began on June 18 and will be at the National Sports Museum until Sunday, September 16, so there is still plenty of time to catch it.
