New floating pontoon adds to city attractions

Recreational boaters from Footscray and throughout the city are enjoying a new amenity established on the Maribyrnong River.

A new floating pontoon extending 30 metres was the first of the facilities to be completed at Footscray Park, followed more recently by the establishment of riverside barbecue and picnic shelters and an upgrade to the Maribyrnong River Trail pathway connections.

Features of the new pontoon include a platform on the lower level that is ideally located for paddle craft users to capture views of the beautiful Footscray Park.

Richard Wynne, Acting Water Minister, said the popular new attraction enables more local people and visitors to take in the iconic waterway's unsung beauty, and he added:

"We’ve invested $1.2 million to improve recreational facilities along the Maribyrnong River, Moonee Ponds Creek and Werribee River and this new pontoon gives another mooring spot for small recreational boats and kayaks as well as a place for fishing and views along the River Corridor."

New attractions such as the pontoon have often been featured in brochure printing campaigns aimed at highlighting some of the area's top spots.

The cost of the project was met jointly by Melbourne Water in partnership with the Victorian Government, which provided $400,000 in funding as part of the Boosting Recreational Water Use Initiative, together with $300,000 from Maribyrnong Council, which also undertook the installation works.
