Among the many items found at the Melbourne Museum of Printing are typesetting machines, typecasting machines, pre-press equipment, printing machines, a founts collection, handset type, typesetting matrix and typecasting matrix. The museum also features many artefacts from the printing past such as negatives, printing plates, documents, etchings, art prints, office equipment like typewriters and hand printing tools. There is also a library which features Books about printing and business records of older printing firms.
The museum also holds several educational workshops which show what printing and typesetting was like before the age of computers. One of the current workshops is the Roots of Printing workshop. This 8-hour course for “professionals working in Design, Printing, Publishing, Advertising and Graphic Arts or teaching in those fields” concentrates on traditional printing practices. Basically it is a day-long workshop that will teach those in attendance the basics of printing as it existed before the advent of computers. Class size is limited to 8 and costs $329.
