The Melbourne Museum of Printing in Footscray is opening, on a limited basis, for public visits.
The museum showcases the technology printing companies used before the development of computers and desktop publishing software.
When the museum is fully operational, the museum will have a working printery where visitors will be able to see all stages of a Print job from composition to binding on various printing systems. The displays will encompass newspaper, book and other types of printing.
The museum has an educational program where you can learn about traditional printing. If you do use Desktop Publishing programs like InDesign or Photoshop, you will benefit from seeing how typesetting and printing was done before the advent of computers.
Three courses are offered by the museum including a Certificate in Typographic Perspective, which takes two weeks, an all day workshop called Roots of Printing and a half-day workshop for secondary students of graphics, journalism and desktop publishing.
The Melbourne Museum of Printing has a shop where you can buy Books about the printing process, sample packets of handset types and printed Posters, poems and leaflets.
The printing museum also has an access studio where artists, writers and poets are welcome to use the museum’s equipment.
Visiting the museum is by appointment only until public days restart.
