Local charity looking to feed those on the poverty line

A charity is urging people to get behind its campaign to provide affordable food for those living in poverty.

The Asylum Seeker Resource Centre is hoping to use crowd-funding to launch a new food truck that will support local refugees.

The organisation is due to move to Footscray next month and will run the truck from its new headquarters. It plans to take the vehicle to around 20 locations, mainly in Melbourne’s west side, and sell healthy food to asylum seekers at a discounted price. Fresh food from the truck will also be available for purchase by any residents at competitive prices.

Patrick Lawrence, the centre’s aid director, said many refugees struggled to make ends meet while their applications for asylum were being processed. He said.

“The levels of poverty, homelessness and food insecurity are astronomical because most are not allowed to work or for those that have work rights it can be extremely difficult to get some form of employment.”

The centre has already raised more than $100,000 and is hoping that locals will get behind its campaign, which ends soon, by donating money via its online funding site.

As well as promoting the site via social media, poster printing and flyer printing are cost-effective ways for not-for-profit organisations to promote a campaign on a small budget. To donate, visit www.startsomegood.com
