Latest walking scheme to encourage healthier students and environment

A new VicHealth-sponsored initiative is aiming to get more pupils from Footscray and Maribyrnong to consider walking into school rather than taking the car.

It is hoped that Walk to School Month will improve the health of kids in the area, in addition to reducing pollution.

Families are encouraged to head out on foot to school if they live near enough, or if they are further away, to park on the route and walk part of the way to class.

This is the second year that Maribyrnong City Council has participated in the scheme, and it is hoped that all the local primary schools will take part.

Schools that enrol for the project will get a grant towards their sports fund and a breakfast provided for all the children.

Printing services have been used to create a range of promotional materials, including Posters, stickers, and certificates for children who complete the challenge, while VicHealth is also running competitions throughout the month and offering prizes to schools that do well.

The council is also reminding motorists to be careful when driving near schools next month, and to pay attention to speed limits and parking restrictions.

Walk to School Month starts at the beginning of term four and runs until the end of October.
