Footscray residents have the chance to find out more about their local area this month with a series of educational walks.
The Discover Footscray walks, which take place on Wednesday June 28th, will cover a number of different areas of interest, with commentary from knowledgeable local guides. The tour will explore the region’s history. Starting at one of the area's old banks, it will take in parts of the original township and some locations used in films.
On the following day, the Maribyrnong River will be the focus of attention with a leisurely river cruise. The journey will take visitors from Footscray to Pipemaker Park, with a guide pointing out areas of interest along the way.
Friday's walk will focus in the area’s Vietnamese influence, with exploration of some of the relevant market stalls. On this stroll, participants can learn how to pick the best ingredients and cook in a Vietnamese style.
On Saturday June 29th, sights and sounds of African culture will be on show, along with traditional bread making, henna painting and a coffee ceremony. Later on in the day, a number of art galleries will open to the public.
The week will come to an end on Sunday with a walk around Footscray's laneways – the small roads which once serviced the busy shopping area.
Flyer printing is being used to publicise the walking tours and visitors can find more information on leaflets dotted around in shops and tourism attractions. All tours are free but bookings are essential. For more information, contact Maribyrnong Council.
