Footscray theatre group receives grants

Western Edge Youth Arts which operates out of the Phoenix Youth Centre in Footscray have been awarded two grants from the Australia Council of the Arts. The first grant is a three-year funding grant and the second is the Cultural Leadership Skills Development grant which was awarded to Cymbeline Buhler, the artistic director of communities.

Western Edge relies completely on grants and donation so these come in very handy to keep the organization running and will allow them to develop new projects. A project they are currently working on is called Chronicles Beagle Bay, which is based on oral histories from indigenous elders.

A group such as this is not only important as a way to present theatrical productions to the community which are based on the past as a way of holding onto the traditional ways, it is also a place that teaches young people that a career in theatre and in writing is possible. This sort of education cannot be learned from Books, it must be experienced.

The arts are an important part of our communities, as important as other businesses. Young people who are trained in the arts can be great employees for any business; theatre teaches them self-discipline and gives them the confidence that is wanted in employees. They can also be helpful when helping a company design a marketing campaign that will appeal to the public; creativity in the arts definitely translates to creativity in a marketing department. Footscray brochure printers can be hired to put those ideas into a product that will bring in new business.
