Academics, researchers and curious Footscray locals with a passion for the past are being invited to learn the tricks of the trade when it comes to navigating the State Library of Victoria’s extensive collection of newspapers.
Boasting an impressive collection of over 4,000 local and international newspapers, many of which date back as far as the 18th century, there is a veritable treasure trove of history to be uncovered by the intrepid newshound. The “Newsworthy” workshop organised by the Victorian State Library is intended to introduce novice researchers to finding their way around a collection that adds nearly 300 Victorian newspapers alone each and every week.
In a collection that comprises more than 100,000 volumes or Boxes, many of which have either been copied to microfilm or more recently digitised, there is certainly a lot to learn on finding the top ways to find the information avid researchers may be seeking. Community education programmes such as this can benefit from brochure printing to provide participants with a summary of key points covered.
Recommended for beginners, the workshop will demonstrate how to search for specific articles in the library’s online databases, as well as how to find specific newspapers in hardcopy form and how to use those stored on microfilm.
The next scheduled workshop will run on October 14th at the State Library of Victoria from 10am. Bookings are essential.
