In late May, Footscray launched the fifth and final instalment of its ‘Footscray in Transition’ exhibition.
A five-year project, the exhibition endeavours to capture the evolving urban environmental, cultural and social changes in Footscray by commissioning a new photographer each year to capture 10 familiar landmarks in Print.
The aim of the project is fourfold, including to engage the community in reflection, to produce a permanent record for the local council and community, and to promote the reputation of the Maribyrnong area as ‘a city of the arts’.
This year, the final exhibition features 11 large photographs and a three-minute video by Melbourne-based artist, Kip Scott. Scott is a freelance photographer and video artist, who used the dramatic light of dawn and dusk to enhance the architectural mannerisms of well-known buildings. He is an internationally recognised artist and was presented with the San Pellegrina Cafe Society Photography award in 2013.
The exhibition also includes two photographs from each of the previous year’s instalments by Karen Rees (2011), Grant Hobson (2012), Pierre Vairo (2013) and James Voller (2015). In recognition of the work produced for each of the five instalments, a 60-page colour catalogue will be published featuring each artist’s work.
Housed in the Roslyn Smorgon Gallery, Footscray Community Arts Centre, the exhibition is open until 11 June. Bookings are not essential.
