Live music fans from Footscray and all across Melbourne have been left saddened, as the Fitzroy North pub shut its doors for the last time in December.
Future Signs do not look good for the music venue, popularly known as The Empress (Of India Hotel).
All upcoming gigs have been cancelled, with all poster printing advising as such. Sources close to the music industry suggest the premises had been closed hurriedly.
Approached by local media, a venue booker confirmed that the doors would be closed indefinitely. Zen Mejglo went on to explain this was as a result of personal reasons of the venue's owner.
It is understood that there is work being done to find alternative venues for the shows however but, at the time of writing, there have been no developments.
There were a large number of shows scheduled, particularly bearing in mind of the time of year.
With other venues throughout the city booked months and weeks in advance, Footscray music fans could well find themselves with less choice in future and the venue will no doubt be sorely missed by its regulars.
An iconic venue to many, and an established entertainment venue in a growing residential area of the city, The Empress has seen many huge acts take to the stage.
