The event has been described in Flyers and media releases as showcasing experiential art “to envelope and transform audiences.”
City of Maribyrnong Mayor Catherine Cumming said the area hosts a diverse, thriving and rich arts community, and the new platform represents yet another effective way to show off their talents.
She said the Festival, which will begin with a packed weekend featuring a huge music celebration at the popular Footscray Community Arts Centre, is being presented in partnership between the Victorian Government and the city in conjunction with Creative Victoria.
The programme is widespread, she said, with various venues hosting everything from a special 1930s Berlin Kabarett complete with a codeword entry and post-performance speakeasy, to an intimate opera cruise down the Maribyrnong River.
A home in Footscray’s Moore Street will also be transformed by artists from indirect Object, into a powerful dreamscape of vibrations and sounds in what they describe as an immersive exhibition.
Due West’s vision, according to Festival Creative Director Zoe Beyer, is to inspire exploration in the western part of the city. She said:
“We’ve worked closely with the local arts community to develop a programme which is indicative of the vast talent in the west.”
The Due West: Immersive Arts Festival will be held from August 10 to 27.
