CSL set to establish new HQ in biomedical hub

The headquarters of biotech company CSL is to be relocated to a new purpose-built establishment in Parkville, near Footscray.

It is believed the company will become a major part of the biomedical hub of Parkville, which already boasts many universities, hospitals and research facilities on Melbourne CBD’s northern edge.

Minister for Priority Precincts, Gavin Jennings said the move will secure the global headquarters of CSL in the city for some time to come, adding:

“This announcement strengthens Melbourne’s global reputation as the nation’s premier location for biomedical discoveries, commercial opportunities and innovation that creates jobs and saves lives.”

He said the organisations located within the hub will also be able to collaborate more often which will help drive commercial growth and innovation.

According to Jennings, $16.5 billion of Victoria’s economy comes from the biomedical sector each year. Research-strong sectors such as this also assist other local industries such as Print shops and other service providers.

The construction phase of the new headquarters is expected to create hundreds of jobs and when the facility opens in 2024, 800 of CSL’s workers are expected to be relocated from the company’s Docklands and Poplar Road, Parkville campuses.

A world-class manufacturing facility at Broadmeadows, owned by CSL, will remain devoted to producing plasma products, while its existing campus at Parkville will be retained for anti-venom and influenza vaccine production.

Parkville is among five of Victoria’s Priority Precincts where the government aims to focus on development, delivering jobs and improving liveability.
