Footscray residents are being encouraged to put their best foot forward to improve local health facilities at the annual Walk West event.
The event includes two courses, one of five kilometres and one of 10 kilometres which both follow a route along the Maribyrnong River. Entrants may walk or run either course, while supporters could use banner printing to encourage the participants as they head round the course.
Activities for spectators will also be held in Footscray Park, including children’s entertainment, food vans and a DJ.
Entry is free but all participants are asked to raise funds for the event’s cause, which is designed to improve healthcare for children in West Melbourne with initiatives based at Sunshine Hospital’s maternity and children’s ward. This was set up with help from the inaugural walk in 2014.
This year, the organisers hope to raise money for projects, including special goggles that project DVDs onto the roof of MRI scanners, sleepover couches for families of pregnant women, tablets for children being treated at the hospital and research into gestational diabetes.
The team and individual that raise the most money will receive special prizes including Go Pro cameras, movie screenings and restaurant vouchers.
Walk West takes place next Sunday, March 6 at Doug Mills Reserve in Footscray. Registrations for the event and a fundraising page can be made on the Walk West website.
