Throughout April, creative producer and artist Chantal will operate out of the creative and intimate space known as Artsbox where artists are able to explore and test ideas, create new work and build their own arts practice.
Housed in a converted shipping container in front of Footscray Library, the Artsbox is the home base of artists-in-residence. Chantal will use the space as a recording studio in which she will gather the beliefs or opinions of local residents to help develop her project.
The artist said the aim is to document Footscray through street conversations, audio interviews and sound, adding:
“I will be creating a renegade audio recording studio in which the stories of locals and visitors to Footscray will be documented. Footscray is changing rapidly, which is why l want to use this opportunity to interview people. My line of enquiry is ‘what is Footscray to you?’”
Until April 30, everyday uniquely-Footscray scenes will be recorded along with local stories told by those who have lived in the area for many years. Chantal aims to present contemporary Footscray in a digital audio tour format which will give visitors an indication of life in the suburb today. Brochure printing services are also widely used in the tourism sector.
There will be many sounds to be heard, she said, such as the busy Footscray Market and regular soundscapes like train announcements, demolition and restaurant kitchens.
