Residents from Richmond, Victoria and throughout the City of Yarra are being urged to embrace the concept of riding to work.
Each October, bicycle riders from across the nation take part in the Ride2Work Day event, which has developed into the biggest commuter riding celebration in the country.
The main aim, according to organisers, is to normalise the concept of riding bikes to work and to encourage the practice to become a more regular activity.
The annual event gives everyone an opportunity to have a go at it as well as keeping frequent riders motivated and able to invite fellow work mates to join them, a spokesman said.
Initiatives such as poster printing are undertaken each year to assist those participating in advertising the Ride2Work Day within their local workplace and community.
Yarra Council is supporting local education centres and workplaces that wish to take part in the national event.
A Council spokesman said when it comes to cycling, Yarra is one of the most prolific areas in Victoria.
He said the area boasts 47km of bike lanes as part of the road system, as well as 32km of shared paths off-road, and riding to work is already a daily activity for 8.5% of the local population.
The spokesman added that cycling to work each day provided many benefits including improved productivity, morale, health and wellbeing.
This year’s Ride2Work event will be held on October 12.
