Richmond families and those living around Fitzroy are set to benefit from the establishment of a senior secondary college, for which construction has recently begun.
The start of works on the Fitzroy Gasworks School was announced by Member for Richmond Richard Wynne and Education Minister James Merlino.
In June, early works were preceded by the release of the project's graphic design and specifications that indicated a vertical school and a campus that will cater for senior students attending Collingwood College and Fitzroy High School. It will be among 14 new campuses and schools set to begin operations in 2022.
The vertical design puts it among seven similar constructions, with the others being McKinnon Secondary College campus, South Melbourne Primary School, Richmond High School, Prahran High School, Fishermans Bend Secondary School and Docklands Primary School.
Watpac Constructions secured the contract for the project, which, when complete, will include indoor sports courts, a metal and woodwork hub, a technology and digital design hub, performance and arts space, general state-of-the-art learning spaces, an activity space and an outdoor court on the rooftop.
The former Gasworks site, bordered by Queens Parade, Alexandra Parade and Smith Street, Forms part of a State Government vision for an urban village incorporating new housing, a school campus and open space. It is hoped the school will help re-energise what was once a primarily industrial hub.
Up to 100 new schools are expected to be constructed and operating by 2026.
