Street art shines in inner-city Melbourne

Once considered to be mindless vandalism, street art has now graduated to become a fully-fledged and legitimate form of artistic expression – nowhere more so than in Richmond and wider Melbourne.

Most artists use paint as their medium in creating their works of art, but sticker or paste-ups using parts of old Signs, or even homemade poster printing, has become another popular medium that can be used to tell the artist’s story.

With support from the Victorian government and permission from local businesses, artists are creating a new dynamic culture of cutting-edge artistic endeavour.

The narrow lane-ways of Melbourne’s inner city are being transformed from drab and dreary, to vibrant creative spaces with giant painted murals plastering city buildings, and the art has attracted the attention of local and international visitors.

Recognising the importance of street art’s contribution to Melbourne’s urban diversity, the City of Melbourne has commissioned large works of art, sponsors a youth street art mentoring program and provides funding opportunities for local artists.

Street art can be seen in many of the inner city suburban laneways and along the number 86 tram route. The Richmond Railway Station, while home to an amazing array of street art, also marks the beginning of the Richmond to Cremorne street art self-guided walk.

An easy 28-minute stroll, this walk is one of many offered by Melbourne City Council.
