Residents invited to have say about old Gasworks site

The site of the old Fitzroy Gasworks has been declared by the State Government as surplus land and is being considered for future development.

The potential renewal of the site, which is well known to residents of Fitzroy and Richmond, is currently being hotly debated by Places Victoria, the City of Yarra and the Victorian Government.

A period of community engagement has also been introduced to give locals a chance to have an input on the site’s future.

Flyer printing and marketing services have helped spread the word to residents who have until June 10 to participate in the community sessions.

City of Yarra Mayor Roberto Colanzi is excited about the 3.9 hectare site’s potential redevelopment which he said would be ideal for something like the indoor, six-court sports stadium that had been advocated by Yarra Council a decade ago.

He said the former use of the site as an industrial precinct, which dates back more than 125 years, means extensive remediation will need to be undertaken before any future development can go ahead.

Mayor Colanzi urged residents to take part in any public consultation opportunities and said Council priorities for the site will include open space, improved public transport, community facilities, affordable housing and a design that is environmentally sustainable.

He said Places Victoria has been appointed by The Department of Treasury and Finance to assess the land’s development potential.
