Development approval for the creation of a mini suburb on what was once the site of the Amcor paper mill is set to spark renewed residential interest with up to 2,500 homes earmarked for
the 16 hectare site.
Near Richmond, Victoria the Alphington Paper Mill site is expected to become home to almost 5,000 residents when complete, according to Yarra Council Mayor Roberto Colanzi.
The council recently approved the plan after revisions had been made to the original application. Mayor Colanzi said changes to the original plans were prompted following a series of community consultations.
Digital printing of a sketch of the development was used during the discussions to illustrate the placement of key facilities including one for sports and 1,700 sqm dedicated to community buildings.
The mayor stated that a 30 m buffer area between the Yarra River and the development was also provided, adding that improvements to the original design had also been effected on density, heights and road widths.
Colanzi said a better design and additional open space had also been negotiated.
The council’s resolution to give the go ahead to the revised plans has now put the onus on the joint developers Alpha Partners and Glenvill Homes to move forward and make the required changes to the project which is expected to take up to a decade to finalise all construction elements.
If all moves ahead as planned Craig Trembath of Glenvill Development said construction could be underway within the next six months.
