A recent report by Savills has named the city of Melbourne as one of the top 30 greatest cities for tech companies.
Melbourne with its vibrant suburbs like Carlton, Docklands and Richmond has bested cities like Seoul (the home of Samsung) and China’s technological hotspot Shenzhen to earn 22nd position in the report.
According to Savills, a tech city has to meet certain criteria in order to get into the top thirty, which Melbourne has achieved. For example, it must be an important centre of tech within its region, a vibrant city in which to live and work and also a generator of, and magnet for, talent.
Melbourne fulfils each criteria with its many technology dedicated universities, decidedly cheaper cost of living, exciting lifestyles and a generally happy population. Though, in comparison to the major cities, and the number 1 tech city New York, Melbourne falls short in everything but talent.
The talent coming out of Melbourne right now is probably the most exciting aspect of the study as it shows that although Australia may lack in other areas compared to the big cities, the Melbourne tech talent is just as big.
The tech boom that is taking hold of our world is impacting things we never thought it would, with apps that scan your business cards and cars that drive themselves. Everyone is on the edge of their seats waiting for the next technological advance.
