Funding boost towards better bike paths

The City of Yarra, which includes Richmond, is among five councils in inner city Melbourne to welcome a major investment by the State Government towards popular cycling routes.

The councils, which also include Stonnington, Maribyrnong, Port Phillip and Melbourne, are all part of the Inner Melbourne Action Plan (IMAP), which seeks to create an integrated network for cyclists. The recent announcement of funding to the tune of $13 million by the Victorian Government will allow bike infrastructure to be improved.

According to an IMAP media release, cycling has come to the fore as an active transport option during COVID-19. It stated:

"The pandemic has in fact presented us with a golden opportunity to re-imagine transport across greater Melbourne, review our bike riding commitments in the inner suburbs and make changes to encourage bike riding, bringing with it widely recognised health, economic and environmental benefits.”

Following several years of recommendations towards an integrated model, an innovative staged cycling network has been proposed. IMAP's proposal is aimed at alleviating pressure on public transport, reducing traffic congestion, improving safety for bike riders and increasing bike path connectivity throughout the five council areas.

Such innovations often also include the use of professional printing services to create new signage.

The IMAP project is also expected to bring added benefits to the economy, improving the way in which people connect with Melbourne CBD and creating a range of new short-term jobs.
