The opportunity to move into the 21st century is being undertaken by Victorian Aboriginals who aim to develop an Aboriginal treaty in Victoria.
The election of representatives to the First Peoples’ Assembly will now be available online and the voting age has also been lowered to 16. The Assembly will be made up of traditional land owners and will work to prepare future treaties.
The Richmond football club and the Korin Gamadji Institute, have partnered together to lend their support to the treaty, with the partnership being announced by Treaty Advancement Commissioner, Jill Gallagher.
The treaty will be propelled into the public eye when the Dreamtime at the G match between Essendon and Richmond takes place, with the treaty Logo Design to be a notable part of the Tiger’s guernsey and is also expected to be displayed at the grounds.
The Dreamtime match will be played as part of the Indigenous Round and is a major fixture of the AFL season and includes traditional festivities and guest speakers. The match aims to be a celebration of sport, culture and history.
Gallagher commented that as well as considering traditional ways of doing business, there was a need to be practical and more modern in an effort to encourage greater participation in voting.
Enrolments for First Peoples’ Assembly Votes will be on May 10th.Get a Free Quote for Logo Design
