Efforts to minimise the impact on the local area from the proposed establishment of a new high school at Richmond, Victoria are being requested by Yarra Council.
The project, which has received the general support of Council, will provide facilities for an estimated 650 students in Years 7 to 12 when fully operational.
Year 7 student enrolments are expected to begin in 2018.
According to Mayor Roberto Colanzi, a precinct approach to the school’s planning would be welcomed.
He said Council had long advocated for improved education opportunities in the suburb, but emphasised appropriate planning was integral to minimising the school’s impact on parking and traffic movement affecting surrounding organisations, facilities and the greater community.
Many are advertised regularly on Flyers and Brochures, such as Richmond Union Bowling Club, Richmond Leisure Centre, the Gleadell Street Market, Citizen’s Park and the Bridge Road traders.
Mayor Colanzi said it was important that the design of the school integrated well into the local precinct.
He said Council also wanted to see representatives of the Gleadell Street Market, Citizens Park Users Groups, youth, residents and parents of children who would potentially attend the school in the future included on the State Government Community Liaison Group to provide additional feedback and ideas.
He said works on the new school project are expected to begin early in 2017. However, the Mayor added, plans were yet to be finalised as to whether the construction will span one or two sites within the precinct.
