Community kept informed on Richmonds new school progress

Plans for the construction of a $43 million secondary school at Richmond, Victoria are being discussed with members of the community at information stands set up at various local events.

The latest information booth, which was held at the Gleadell Street Markets this month, provided interested residents with full details about the new school, which is to be located on land facing Griffiths and Highett streets, close to the existing site in Gleadell Street.

Minister for Education James Merlino said when complete, the new Richmond High School will accommodate 650 students.

The larger site, he said, will provide more recreational and outdoor space for students as well as allow for future growth and expansion.

He said the school’s existing site will be home to sports facilities and a full gymnasium allowing students to enjoy many sports including boxing, tennis, swimming, lawn bowls, basketball, netball, football and cricket.

Mr. Merlino said concept and graphic design of the development are being influenced by ongoing community consultation and input from the New School Planning Group.

The group includes Yarra City Council representatives along with community members, parents and local school principals. Other local organisations being consulted include Richmond United Bowls Club, Richmond Multicultural Children’s Centre and Richmond Boxing and Fitness Club.

Richmond’s new school, which is expected to be completed in time for the start of the 2018 school year, is one of 23 in the state to receive funding this year.
