Community groups offered space in Richmond development

A new community facility is to be developed in Richmond, and local groups are being encouraged to put in a bid to use it.

The new facility will be based at the former Channel 9 studios used by the television station from its beginnings in the 1950s. It was closed in 2011, after the owners decided to move operations to a new studio complex in Melbourne’s Docklands.

Part of the area is being turned into a residential complex and Yarra City Council is redeveloping some of the site into facility that can be used by new residents, community groups and local organisations.

The venue, due to open next year, will have 700 sq m of space available; 100 sq m will be available for tenants, while the other 600 sq m will be available for hire and community use.

The council is inviting local groups to express their interest in taking on a three-year lease. Lead tenants would be given the opportunity to use the premises rent-free, in return for working with the council to establish the venue and provide caretaker services.

Interest in the property is likely to be strong, so organisations might like to use a Print company to help prepare their expression of interest, which would help them stand out from the crowd.

Submissions need to be made by Friday 2nd May. For more information, contact Yarra City Council.
