Youth Parliament applications open in Victoria

A youthful look at the way the Victorian Parliament operates is on offer to youths aged between 16 and 25.

The opportunity is part of the 2019 YMCA Victoria Youth Parliament, for which applications from Mitcham and throughout the state are now being invited. Minister for Youth Gabrielle Williams said the programme gave participants a chance to be heard, adding:

“Youth Parliament amplifies the voices of young people across Victoria and gives them an opportunity to engage with the highest levels of our government. We’re giving young Victorians the chance to shape our policies, programmes and services – I look forward to hearing passionate debate on issues that young people care about.”

She said Youth Parliament members had been very successful in the past and had helped to shape upward of 25 pieces of legislation in Victoria, including those relating to gun reforms, roadside drug testing and mandatory bike helmets.

Successful applicants will receive intensive training at a special camp taking place in May, where each will develop public speaking, leadership, and teamwork skills.

The drafting of Bills followed by debate and voting will then be undertaken by the young parliamentarians in team situations while the Victorian Parliament sits for three days in July.

Whether applicants are looking to work towards holding their own parliamentary Business Cards one day or just wanting to experience what goes on, applications are to be submitted by March 7.
