Whitehorse Council bring arts to schools

The Whitehorse City Council places high value on the role professional artists can play in the educational sector. As a result, schools in Mitcham and surrounding suburbs can benefit from the Artists In Schools (AIS) Program.

It has been created specifically to provide funding each year to schools to assist in employing a curator or professional artist to complete a project or artwork within the school. The program provides many benefits to educational institutions. Students discover an appreciation of the arts, learning is enriched and both teachers and pupils have an opportunity to learn from professionals as they work together to create a meaningful project for their school community.

Funding for these projects covers multiple areas such as performing arts, visual arts, literature and music. Past projects have included a mosaic, metalwork, sculptures, ceramics and book illustrations.

Schools that meet the Whitehorse AIS objectives stand a better chance of receiving funding. The program hope to see schools provide an opportunity for children of all cultural backgrounds and abilities to participate in the project and for schools to consider the environment and sustainability factors. The project selected by schools should complement the curriculum.

Schools have the freedom to select their own artist or they may seek advice from AIS co-ordinators. Artists may utilise printing services to create designs and scripts in the planning of their creative projects.

The application form for 2021, guidelines and objectives regarding the project can be found on the Box Hill Town Hall website. Schools need to complete and submit applications by the 28 August 2020.
