The City of Whitehorse has received a great response to its call for nominations from community groups and sporting clubs for the 2015 Whitehorse Sport and Recreation Australia Day Trophy.
The annual award is handed out to a community group, recreation club or sporting club that has created initiatives for greater involvement to help the broader Whitehorse community, which covers an area of 64 sq km stretching from Box Hill to Mitcham, Victoria.
Whitehorse Councillor Ben Stennett said the clubs and community groups provided a valuable service to residents, and the Australia Day Trophy was a great way to acknowledge their support.
He added that a nomination enabled locals to show their recognition while also boosting the club’s status within the community.
Nominations for the Sport and Recreation Australia Day Trophy take into account a number of activities undertaken within the community. They range from charity work and fundraising to providing opportunities for disadvantaged community groups to be a part of club activities.
These could be as simple as participating in a sporting event, or helping staff with a flyer or poster printing design.
Last year’s trophy was awarded in recognition of the club and community program Family Day, and teamwork at Nunawading Vikings Basketball Club.
Previous winners have included the Box Hill Rugby Union Football Club and Blackburn Junior Football Club.
The trophy winner will be announced on January 26th (Australia Day), 2015.
