Under the ban, retailers will not be able to distribute lightweight Bags made of plastic. This includes Bags compostable, biodegradable and degradable with a thickness less than 36 microns.
Councillor Tina Liu, of the City of Whitehorse, said that each year the number of plastic Bags used was exceeding 1 billion and she added:
“Most of these Bags end up in landfill and around 10 million end up as litter that pollutes our environment and endangers wildlife.”
She said many retailers, homewares stores and supermarkets stocked compact and lightweight nylon Bags, which are ideal for use as Shopping Bags and can be reused many times over. Major changes to shopping habits such as this are often advertised widely on a range of marketing tools including flyer printing.
Councillor Liu said the move towards shoppers taking along their own reusable Bags may be difficult for some to remember at first but she recommended that everyone keep a bag in the car or in a place that is easily accessible to grab when heading to the shops.
She explained that as people develop better bag habits, remembering them will become much easier. The ban comes into effect from November 1st.Get a Free Quote for Shopping Bags Get a Free Quote for Bags
